TAST # 122 Chained Bar

TAST - Take A Stitch Tuesday, has reached stitch 122. Everyone I talk to, who is not doing TAST,  is amazed that there are so many various stitches. Many more to come I hope! Go to Pintangle and let Sharon tell you all about this great online place for embroidery stitches.

TAST #122 is called Chained Bar. Basically it is a row of Zig-zag Chain Stitches worked on top of a base of straight stitches or a ribbon.

It would be nice to call it Zig-zag Chain Couching, but there is a snag. These stitches have a tendency to 'float' and won't hold a ribbon down neatly. It is very obvious in the first row of brown Zig-zag Chain Stitches.
In the third row from the top I faked it, and made Detached Chain Stitches in a zig-zag pattern.

I also made two samples with two colours. The one at the bottom is Magical Chain.

Sorry for your frustrations
If mine are floating too much as the needle enters the fabric pierce the end of the previous loop- it is in the instructions - perhaps you missed it queenie

I guess if you wanted to use that stitch as couching on clothing, you would have to catch the edge of the ribbon from time to time. It is pretty though.

Can see the cheating version has worked best Queenie and like the 2 colour ones, looking forward to seeing you next week getting excited about the show and all the quilts we will see, Cheryl has entered one but not seen a photo of it yet, she dropped it off at the collection point on monday,

Of course, Miss! First lesson of TAST is learn to read! Back into the naughty corner, Queenie!
Thank you, Sharon, for taking time to comment - I learn so much from you.

Exactly, just like Sharon pointed out. I just need to learn to read instructions!

Now that Sharon has reminded me of how to work the Zig-zag Chain Stitch properly, I no longer need to cheat. Naughty student caught out, eh!
Oh, I am so much looking forward to seeing the two of you again and Cheryl's quilt too, of course.

See what you mean about the first row being loose and the magical chain has always intriqued me ! I would probably place a bead or french knot to pin it down in strategic places,But of course Sharon has come up with the solution haha.............

The space in the centre is waiting for you to stitch a sample like Sharon says, then you can come out of the naughty corner. All the samples are looking very good anyway.

I like how this looks and I don't think it will be too difficult for me. I'm about ten stitches behind, but maybe I can get back to it with this stitch. Nice job!

I love the variation! I also love the way you worked a magical chain in there. I find them time consuming, but oh so fun to see when they are done!

There is something appealing to me, about the first sample. I don't know if it's the round chains or the relaxed line but I do like it. The coloured versions experiments also.

Thanks, Carolyn.

The Zig-zag stitch anchored with other stitches would make a beautiful cq seam. Adding beads or sequins is another way to steady the unruly loops!

Yes, Miss!
The designer in you instantly spot what is lacking. Yes, that space needs thread treatment!

With all the projects you are working on at the same time it is no wonder if you are lagging behind. However, you are so quick you will soon catch up.

Magical Chain Stitch is an old favourite of mine and I just could not resist the temptation to use it here.

Thank you for your kind words.
When we work two stitches on top of each other the choice of colour is important. You can see how easy it is to pick out the brown and yellow, but with brown and purple they blend in too much.

For free style the top sample is charming, but if you need a neat and tidy row you will have to follow Sharon's advice and catch a little bit of the thread to secure the stitch.
